The Catalan food industry holds a leading position in the context of Spain and it plays an essential role in the Barcelona area, as it concentrates a large volume of production and most of the research, innovation and foreign investment activities generated by the sector.

Other examples of the projection of Barcelona in the food sector include the potential of its distribution facilities - it has been calculated that Mercabarna supplies more than 10 million people, from north-eastern Spain to northern Italy. The Alimentària Food Fair - the second-largest food fair in Europe - and the long list of universities and research centres that work in the fields of nutrition and food safety.
