State-of-the-art urban city projects

The city is constantly trying to improve and develop projects that offer a lot of opportunities for the future. That explains why it is constantly immersed in large-scale urban redevelopment, involving major public investment and big opportunities for private investment.

The projects currently underway are shaping the Barcelona of the 21st century, where logistics, internationalisation, accessibility, technological development, creativity, design and research mark the strategic lines, without forgetting other projects designed for spaces that combine various uses, social cohesion and sustainability.

Some of the projects being carried out in the Barcelona Metropolitan Area:

Barcelona Catalonia:a project led by Barcelona City Council and the Catalan government through IncasÚl, which includes the main urban development projects in the Barcelona Metropolitan Area, in all more than 7 million m2 of building surface area for the knowledge economy. All investors and constructors will find the opportunities they are looking for in Barcelona Catalonia: different land uses, good returns and competitive prices.

Smart City Campus 22@:a new city district where the most innovative companies, universities and research centres co-exist. This project began in 2000 and involves the creation of 4 million m2, most of it earmarked for knowledge-intensive productive activities. Find out why over 1,500 companies have already set up there.

La Sagrera high speed:the biggest urban and rail redevelopment project in Spain. It is driving the development of 164 hectares in the north-east of Barcelona and a new area of sustainable urban growth, with new amenities, public services, a broad range of housing, a hub of economic and commercial activity and the biggest linear urban park in the city. The station will be a strategic transport hub for high-speed, local and regional trains, the metro, and intercity buses, and it will also have underground access from the motorways. Once it is finished, the station will be able to handle 100 million passengers a year.

Marina del Prat Vermell:an old industrial neighbourhood in the Sants-MontjuÔc district of Barcelona that is being totally transformed. The new Fira de Barcelona trade fair site and the D38 district business project mean this is one of the most dynamic areas in urban development terms, with 80 hectares available for creating, in the long term, a new eco-efficient neighbourhood in a strategic location, with potentially 30,000 inhabitants and a high level of services.

Barcelona Airport:Barcelona has the best airport in Europe, according to Airport Council International. With a capacity of 55 million passengers a year, it is a growing airport that aims to improve the city's connections with the world's main destinations. A first-class facility only 12 km from the city centre and 3 km from the port, it is key to the city's economic strategy.

Barcelona Metro Line 9:at a length of 47.8 km it will be the longest underground line in Europe, connected to the main municipalities around the city: Santa Coloma de Gramenet, Badalona, Barcelona, L'Hospitalet de Llobregat and El Prat de Llobregat. This new line will have 52 stations and it will improve connections within the Barcelona Metropolitan Area. One part is already fully operative.

Port of Barcelona:the biggest in the Mediterranean in terms of the volume of goods it handles, it continues to be the number one port in Europe for cruise traffic and the fourth cruise home port (where cruise ships start or finish their cruises) in the world. A port that is continually growing in square metres and services.

Other metropolitan projects:under the Barcelona Strategic Metropolitan Plan, various projects are being carried out in the Metropolitan Area. Visit its website to find out the most important ones.
