New business incubator for companies with high technological impact

The breeding ground, located in the MediaTIC building, is the fifth that Barcelona Activa launches.

Barcelona Activa launches the MediaTic incubator, a new space for growing companies that has been opened just 30 years after the first breeding ground was opened in the city and after having driven a thousand entrepreneurial initiatives. The incubator is dedicated to companies with high technological impact in fields such as robotics, the Internet of Things, artificial intelligence, nanotechnology or space technologies. The MediaTIC breeding ground will host products or services initiatives in the developing or the marketing phases. The incubation period, therefore, will be variable and will reach a maximum of five years.

At the moment, one company, Rokubun, dedicated to navigation systems (GPS) has been installed, but the forecast is to reach about twenty projects. An international area will be created to carry out crosslanding actions with different cities of the world so that foreign companies will be able to set up to do market research actions. There will be two annual editions of these meetings, coinciding with 4YFN and Smart City Expo World Congress fairs. The Hi-Tech preacceleration program will also be developed for 10 intensive projects in the use of technology that are in a very early stage, which will also be useful to detect potential candidates to enter the incubator.

The new center has 1,400 m2 distributed in about twenty modules ranging from 15 to 70 m2, with common spaces and a training room. The incubator joins the already existing ones: Glòries, Almogàvers Business Factory, ESA BIC Barcelona and the Technology Park. In these spaces work more than 200 companies -newly created or in growing process. This action is part of the plan Barcelona Digital City and in addition to promoting the high technological impact of entrepreneurship, has among its objectives to combat the digital gap, to put together the companies incubated with social and solidary economy initiatives and to favor projects lead by women.
