Barcelona is applying to host the European Medicines Agency

Barcelona is one of the candidate cities to host the new headquarters of the European Medicines Agency (EMA), the EU body responsible for monitoring and evaluating the safety of medicines to the European Union.

Barcelona is applying to host the EMA because after the United Kingdom's decision to abandon the European Union the current agency's location in London has to move.

The application (together with the hashtag #BCN4EMA) is jointly presented by the Barcelona City Council, the Generalitat de Catalunya and the Ministry of Health, and it has the support of the civil society, represented by entities and personalities.

Its main strengths include the 31 biomedical research centres in the city, the 230 laboratories, a major concentration of the pharmaceutical industry, the quality of the health system, the innovative and entrepreneurial ecosystem, good communications and the existence of 41 international colleges.

Another pillar of the candidacy is the proposed headquarters, the Torre Glòries. With 33,000 m2 available and designed by the architect Jean Nouvel, it meets all technical requirements to host this institution and has the capacity for 900 people to work immediately on April 1st, 2019. The fact that it is located within the 22@ district is linked to the commitment to innovation and technological development.

There is an ecosystem of more than 1.600 companies that could also be moved around the current headquarters of the EMA. It is a European body that receives more than 40.000 visits per year and has an annual budget of 340 million euros.

The deadline for nominations closes on 31st July, but it is already known that Amsterdam, Copenhagen, Vienna, La Valletta or Bonn are also applying to host the institution. The final decision will be taken in November by the Council of Europe.
