Steady Growth for the Tourism sector in Barcelona

The Annual Report on Tourism, produced by Barcelona City Council, shows an steady growth in terms of turnover and occupation. Tourism accounts for the 17% of the new job posts created in the city.

The Report confirms a 5.4% growth in the number of visitors and a 3.3% growth in terms of overnight stays.  Average expenditure per person grew from € 330.6 to €375.2 (travel expenses excluded). First 2016 semester figures confirm the January-May aggregated upward trend, with 6.3% more visitors and 7.7% more overnight stays.

In 2015, Barcelona welcomed 8.303.000 tourists in hotels and registered 17.656.000 overnight stays. This represents a 5.4% growth in the number of visitors and a 3.3% growth in overnight stays, compared to 2014. Port of Barcelona registered 2.540.000 cruise passenger movements, 7% more than 2014, and the number of passengers at Barcelona's International Airport grew by 5.7%, from € 37.55M to €39.71M. The trends remains stable in the first months of 2016, with an aggregated growth of 13.4% from January to May.

In terms of impact in the job market, hiring in the Tourism Sector in the first semester stands around 39,000 people, which accounts for the 17% of the occupation generated in the city (228,607 new contracts).

MICE, on the rise

MICE travel also grew in 2015. A total amount of 2,268 congresses, conventions, conferences and courses took place in Barcelona, a 13% more than in 2014 (1,969).

Barcelona's tourist profile corresponds to a foreigner man (60.4%), around 38 years, who travels for leisure purpose, usually as a couple. 52.5% of the visitors are returning visitors, and 80% travel by plane. In terms of overall satisfaction, the average ratings from tourists grew from 8.4 (2014) to 8.6 (2015).
