Barcelona and Catalonia, a reference in the cultural and creative industries

The sector employed up to 150.600 people in Q3 2015. Figures confirm the importance of the cultural and creative industries sector for Barcelona and Catalonia’s economy.

Following IDESCAT figures, the cultural industries sector in Catalonia was represented by 33.706 companies in 2013, which accounted for a €9.684 million turnover. 

Cultural and creative ecosystem

Barcelona pools several spaces that promote strategic areas linked to knowledge, innovation, ICT and cultural and creative industries. The Catalan Audio-Visual Cluster promotes cultural industries. Catalonia has 12 university structures that develop competitive R+D+I projects with international and European impact, science and technology parks that offer added value services to businesses and spaces such as the Canòdrom – Creative Research Park, the Disseny Hub Barcelona and Fabra i Coats Art Factory.

Animation, audio-visuals and performing arts

Animation and videogames have experienced the highest growth among cultural industries over the last years. Catalan audio-visual sector uses state-of-the-art technologic solutions to foster innovation. Every year, thousands of theatre, circus, dance and music shows take place in Catalonia, some of them with international projection.

Reference events

Sónar, Primavera Sound, Gamelab, Docs Barcelona, Saló International del Còmic, Saló del Manga or Loop Barcelona are the main cultural and creative industries events that take place in Barcelona. 

The Catalan capital, through the ICUB and Barcelona Activa, offers several programs to support the cultural industries. In fact, Barcelona holds a relevant position in international cultural and creativity markets, which results in further investment opportunities. Likewise, the city's cultural heritage and creative scene have positioned Barcelona as one of the main destinations all over the world.
