Telefónica's R&D centre in Barcelona will lead the company's global innovation. The news was announced by Kim Faura, managing director of the multinational's operations in Catalonia, during celebrations to mark the tenth anniversary of its Barcelona-based research laboratory.

As from now, Telefónica's innovation centres in Silicon Valley (USA), Sao Paulo (Brazil), London (UK) and Tel Aviv (Israel) will be coordinated from the Catalan capital.

With 220 workers from 20 countries, this centre has received over 200 million euros in investment over the last ten years.

Amongst other things, it will be in charge of developing products related to the 'Internet of Things', collaborating with the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) on data analysis and participating in open innovation projects with el Bulli Foundation and FC Barcelona.
