Telefónica joins the Foundation Mobile World Capital

Through this participation, the telecommunications company will contribute to the promotion of the mobility sector in Barcelona and will collaborate in the consolidation of existing projects.

The Mayor of Barcelona and president of the Telefónica Barcelona Foundation, Xavier Trias, and the president of Telefónica, César Alierta, have signed an agreement for the active incorporation of the telecommunications company in the world mobile capital initiative.

The aim of this participation is to contribute to promoting entrepreneurship in the mobility sector and collaborate in the consolidation of existing projects that will enable the creation of a cluster of companies in this area.

The agreement will involve a contribution by Telefònica of 7.8 million euros during the period between 2012 and 2014 to develop different projects. The multinational firm will also form part of the Governing Bodies and Board of the Foundation and will become the first major business group to join the Mobile World Capital Barcelona Foundation.

During the signing of the agreement, Mayor Trias affirmed that "we hope to establish a precedent for other companies to follow in the private sphere. We want Barcelona to be a city that is an exponent a new growth model that provides opportunities for everyone and creates quality, stable jobs with high added value".

In addition, César Alierta, Chairman of Telefónica, stated "in the next six years, Barcelona will be the world centre of mobile services in mobility and this is an opportunity that we have to make the most of to build a truly digital society.

Plaça de Catalunya, the hub of the Mobile World Centre

The agreement between MWCapital and Telefónica will entail the location of the Mobile World Centre (MWCentre) in Telefónica's emblematic building situated in Plaça de Catalunya in Barcelona.

The works for the MWCentre, an area of 1,800 square metres distributed on three floors, has already started and is expected to be completed by the beginning of next year. The opening is planned to take place before the next Mobile World Congress, which will be held from 25th to 28th February, 2013.

There will be an exhibition space, which will include advanced mobility-related content, and a multi-purpose area for temporary exhibitions and an auditorium.
