Five innovative startups will participate in the second IBM SmartCamp

The event is an opportunity for companies in the sector to network, make contact with private investors and discover the success track record of leading innovative technology-based startups.

For the second year running, on 31st October, Barcelona Activa headquarters will be the location for the IBM SmartCamp international competition aimed at entrepreneurs and technology-based startups.

During the day, the five finalist companies will present their business ideas and will compete to win the semi-final of the Spanish event.

The companies taking part include Social-Buy.com, which is developing social commerce services that connect e-commerce with social networks; Catchoom, a startup specialising in visual recognition in the "cloud" for advertising, edition and e-commerce applications; and Quadrigam, a company that has created an information software that adds a layer of visual intelligence to data.

Another finalist is SuperTruper, a technology company that develops e-commerce and m-health applications for mobile devices, and PanamNav, a software that authenticates geographical position for social and online payment applications.

In addition, during the event the creators of the selected projects will receive advice from venture capital companies, local and international investors, industry executives and well-known entrepreneurs.

A competition resulting from public-private collaboration

The aim of IMB SmartCamp, which arises from public-private collaboration, is to select the best technology-based solution to create a more intelligent planet in accordance with IBM's Smarter Planet strategy.

In 2011, Barcelona became the first Spanish city to host a semi-final in this competition, which is part of the IBM Global Entrepreneur Programme, which aims to help newly created companies and entrepreneurs put their innovative projects and business ideas into practice.

One of the outstanding startups among the 70 participating projects in last year's IBM SmartCamp was the Barcelona company Bitcarrier, which specialises in solutions for traffic tracking and analysis in real time. The company won the Barcelona heat and came third in the world final.
