Entrepreneurial activity in Barcelona grew in 2011 and marked a turning point with respect to previous years

The rate of entrepreneurial activity (TEA) of the resident population (18-64 years) in the province of Barcelona stands at 7%, which represents an increase of 1.4 percentage points compared with the rate of 2010.

These data will be shown in the report "L'activitat emprenedora a Barcelona i Catalunya 2011", which gathers the main results of the Executive Report Catalonia 2011 by the Global Entrepreneurship Monitor, a project that aims to obtain annual data regarding entrepreneurial activity around the world.

The document, sponsored by the Department of Enterprise and Employment of the Generalitat of Catalonia and the Diputació de Barcelona (Barcelona's Provincial Council) and produced by the Institute for Regional and Metropolitan Studies, devotes a specific section to the entrepreneurial activity in the metropolitan area of Barcelona and includes information about the creation of trading companies in 2011 in Barcelona.

In this regard, the report emphasises that the rate of entrepreneurial activity (TEA) of the resident population in the province of Barcelona stands at 7%, representing an increase of + 1.4 percentage points with respect to the rate of 2010.This result marks a turning point in the evolution of the rate after four consecutive years of decrease.

The Catalan capital is back to a position ahead of France (5.7%) and Finland (6.2%) — who were in front of it in 2010 — and has a higher rate than those of Sweden (5.8%), Germany (5.6%) and Belgium (5.7%).

Creation of new businesses, an alternative to the crisis

Both in Barcelona and in the rest of Catalonia, nearly 8 out of every 10 business projects have been the result of a business opportunity (78.2 and 78.5% of cases, respectively), a higher proportion than in the rest of Spain (71,6%) or the EU (72.8%).

In fact, more than one in four adults (26.4%) in the province of Barcelona was involved in a business process in 2011.

According to data from the INE (Spanish National Statistics Institute), in the city of Barcelona 6.416 trading companies were created in 2011, 322 more (+ 5.3%) than in 2010. Thus, for the first time in the last 5 years, a positive annual evolution of this indicator has been recorded.

The early months of 2012 saw a continuation of the positive trend in the creation of trading companies in Barcelona: between January and April 2,520 new companies were created, 10.7% more than the same period of the previous year.
