World Routes, the world’s most important aeronautics congress, lands in Barcelona

The event has brought together 3,000 international delegates, 350 airlines and 700 airports from around the world in the Gran Via complex of Fira de Barcelona.

About 3,000 delegates from 350 airlines - including the top 10 internationally - and 700 airports have visited the World Routes aeronautics congress, a forum where air services are negotiated a year ahead. Representatives of 130 tourism and government authorities from 125 countries around the world have also attended.

One of the aims of the Generalitat de Catalunya and the Barcelona City Council – institutions that preside over the organizing committee - is to arrange long-distance routes for the Prat airport, since only one-third of the intercontinental traffic is direct currently. The airport, nevertheless, has won this year 44 new intercontinental routes and the new Norwegian base, as well as the launch of the Level airline.

Jaume Collboni, the Council deputy for Enterprise, Culture and Innovation of the Barcelona City Council, has stated that ''hosting this congress is a success for Barcelona and an opportunity that the city must take advantage of'', and has put in value that ''the World Routes is a chance to connect Barcelona with the world and to exercise as a hub in southern Europe.''

In addition to the exhibition area, which has occupied 40,000 m2 in the Gran Via complex of Fira de Barcelonathe congress has been completed with an agenda of meetings and conferences. One of the issues that have been discussed is the role of airlines and companies in managing tourism in a sustainable way.

The next airports hosting the World Routes conference will be Guangdong (2018) and Hannover (2019).
