Barcelona and China exchange investment and business

An institutional delegation of economic promotion of the Barcelona city Council has traveled to China, the second largest global investor, to sign an agreement with the Hong Kong Trade Development Council, the institution that helps the international Chinese companies.

This agreement is intended to secure bridges in trade and business relationship with HKTDC, which has the only southern Europe office in Barcelona for over 30 years. Among other things, the agreement provides that the HKTDC will support companies from Barcelona making its presence possible in those fairs where the city of Hong Kong is present.

The municipal expedition works to strengthen relations with Chinese companies already present in the city to offer advice to those who are interested in Barcelona. Simultaneously, the aim is to present the investment opportunities and economic activity in the city between Asian entrepreneurs and the business world. For this reason, the delegation met with technology companyies as Huawei and ZTE, two of the Chinese mobile technology and smart cities giants.

After the meeting there have been agreements with Barcelona regarding the implementation of smart cities technology. It has also been highlighted how these companies can deepen the relationship with the entrepreneurial sector and innovative startups in Barcelona, using, for exemple, the assets representing the Mobile World Congress and Mobile World Capital. In fact, Huawei has confirmed that it will expand its presence inlMSmart City World Congress in Barcelona considering it as a "great international platform" in the field of smart cities.
In addition to this, the City Council and the Catalan Government have strengthened the work done in the framework of the Committee of Air Routes (CDRA) through a meeting with the corporation Cathay Airlines.

In culture matters, the Barcelona City Council also supports the first edition of Sonar in Hong Kong, which will take place on 1st April. The Sonar arrives to the Asian city as a cultural, creativity, innovation and Technology product, following the participation of Barcelona as the first European city invited to the Business of Design Week in Hong Kong in 2015.

A mission framed in the plan for the international and economic municipal promotion
This institutional mission is a part of the development plan carried out by the International Economic second tenure of Business, Innovation and Culture of the City Council. This mission foresee a 7 million euros for the investment in this term – twice as much as the previous term-  in order to relaunch economic relations overseas, boost the local economy and creat quality jobs.

One of the main lines of action of this plan expects the opening of the city towards Chinese market and the strengthening of "China Desk" as a municipal service for investors and Chinese entrepreneurs who want to explore, do business or invest in Barcelona and those who are already there.
