Barcelona becomes the world mobile communication capital

After the nomination of Barcelona as a Mobile World Capital, the city is working on becoming a world leader in mobile technologies, both business and leisure and cultural.

Barcelona has won out over Milan, Munich and Paris in the race to be named the mobile world capital. Following a decision by the GSMA, the association representing mobile phone operators worldwide, the Catalan capital will host the Mobile World Congress from 2012-2018, once again serving as a technology hub and fostering new business opportunities based on the promotion of mobile communications.

The ambitious and creative project submitted by Barcelona and the weight of the success and growth of the Mobile World Congress in the years it has taken place in the city were the winning candidate's credentials. The city's six years as host of the Mobile World Capital are forecast to be worth 3,459 million euros.

Strategic commitment

The Mayor of Barcelona, Xavier Trias, stated that being named world mobile communication capital puts Barcelona "in an unbeatable position for the future", a result which is the "product of efforts begun some time ago". In this regard, Trias suggested that becoming the Mobile World Capital was a strategic commitment to consolidating Barcelona's status as a benchmark for new technologies, a drive backed by both the public administration and the private sector.

New concept of a capital

Besides the setting up of a living lab in Barcelona, the creation of a permanent headquarters and the development of a programme of industrial, fun and cultural initiatives – including the Mobile World Center and the Mobile World Festival – will be other benefits involved in being the capital. A foundation made up of the City Council, the Government of Catalonia, the Ministry of IndustryBarcelona Trade Fair and the GSMA will manage the projects and activities associated with the mobile world capital.
