Barcelona-el Prat Airport has for the first time surpassed 35 million passengers in one year.
According to the data presented by Aena Aerropuertos, the total number of users who passed through the facilities in 2012 was 35,145,176, a figure which represents a 2.2% increase compared with 2011, a year in which the number of passengers exceeded 34 million.
In the analysis of the global statistical data for 2012, the most notable growth in passengers is that for EU traffic, with an increase of 9.2% compared to the previous year. It follows the non-EU international traffic, which grew by 8.9%, showing a 3.45% increase in intercontinental passengers.
The airport with the most new routes for 2013
With regard to its plans for growth, Barcelona-El Prat will be the airport that opens most new international routes during 2013. With the inauguration of 37 new destinations, Barcelona will surpass Copenhagen (28), Oslo and Kiev (22), London-Gatwick (21), Helsinki (20) and Rome (19), and will connect with regions little exploited so far such as Central Europe or Africa.
This increase is largely due to the ambitious growth plans of the airline Vueling, which this year will begin 28 flights.
