Barcelona is the third favourite European city for creating start-ups

Catalonia's capital went up a position compared with 2016 and has remained among the 5 favourites for the past three years.

Barcelona is the third favourite European city for entrepreneurs for founding a start-up, according to a study published by the British investment firm Atomico. In 2017, Barcelona went up a position compared with 2016 and has remained among the 5 favourites for the past three years.  Only London and Berlin are above Barcelona in this ranking.

This study is based on a survey of 300 entrepreneurs who responded to the question “Where would you start if you could start from scratch?”.  21% of those surveyed chose Barcelona.  The report highlights the internationality of the city, given that 90% of the votes received come from outside Spain.

The study confirms the start-ups' willingness to settle down where they find the best conditions. They consider that "access to talent is the key factor to determine the choice of location."

In the 30 years of the life of Barcelona Activa, more than a thousand companies have passed through the incubation spaces of the local development agency.  80% of the projects that have reached four years have gone ahead and the average return is of 600,000 euros.

Once incubated, companies and start-ups can enjoy the services, programmes and activities of the Business Support Office.
